Strolling the Medieval Streets of Ponferrada
The variety in Spanish towns and cities is amazing! I arrived in Ponferrada this afternoon after a 15 mile hike across the mountains. After cleaning up a bit, I headed out to explore.
One of the good reasons for a visit to Ponferrado is get a glimpse of history. In addition to the stunning Templar Castle, other historical buildings dot the old city making this a bit of a fairytale place. As I sat in the main square, enjoying wine at an outdoor cafe, the Torre de Reloj, was just in front of me. The quaint street that leads to it then enters another plaza. Looking at the Torre, one would think that they had traveled back in time. The exterior condition of the clock tower is excellent and just as it may have been when it was built in the 1500s and was part of the medieval city wall. After visiting the castle, spend some time strolling the streets of old town and enjoy what still remains of the distant past. Enjoy food and drinks at an outdoor cafe and some great people watching.
