A Camino Within The Camino
I think that Father Kevin hits the nail right on its head when he describes the daily small caminos within the walk to Santiago:
“I am becoming aware that each day of the camino is in itself a camino, a small pilgrimage from one place to another, rather complete in itself with its own adventures and mysteries and lessons to be learned along the way. This particular day, as with all the others, is a mysterious mixture of people who become persons, turns in the road opening onto unexpected vistas of new country, doses of physical suffering mixed with flashes of gratitude for being here. This small camino unfolds in bits and pieces, with an hour here and a few hours more there, a coffee and a tortilla in a bar, a ten-minute rest in the shade on the side of the road, a visit with another pilgrim as we walk together for a brief time before one or the other moves ahead or lags behind, increasing heat and fatigue, thoughts peculiar to a passing moment, flatlands here and a mountain looming there, arrival, then rest and washing and food and more rest and laughter and beer and then it is bedtime and my eyes close and another small camino is complete.”
