Rambling Across The Meseta
From Burgos to León, it’s about an 8 day walk with most of it the far reaching plain know as the Meseta. Although some pilgrim’s look to jump over this rather long, flat section of the camino, it was, in fact, one of my favorite sections of The Way. The Meseta is filled with wonderful villages and towns along with a rolling landscape that reminded me of my childhood traveling through the Midwestern part of the United States.
A day out of León is the town of Mansilla de Las Mulas. Like so many other places in Spain and along the camino, the historical architecture, often restored, reminds the pilgrim that so many others have passed by the very same structures that still maintain some of their glory from days gone by. It is this very connection to the history of the beautiful land that makes it even more memorable to the foot traveler.
As I was entering town, my night’s lodging at the Albergue Gaia was easily found. As usual, I arrived early in the afternoon giving me plenty of time to wash off the day’s dust, relax a bit, and then catch up with camino friends for dinner at a downtown restsurant.
