Free Wine? No Way! Yes, Way!
A stop at Irache is not only fun, but it’s one of those special places along the Camino Francés to look forward to. When here, you definitely know you’re in wine country! Irache is one of the large bodegas in Spain that processes grapes and wine in this region, Navarra, and right on the Camino path. Just outside the gates of the winery is a spigot offering a taste of the local wine – free! I found this to be an excellent opportunity to use my pilgrim’s “shell” as the perfect glass for sampling. Some of the younger pilgrims, on more of a budget, filled up their water bottles full of wine. Not daring to drink that much while still having miles to walk on a very warm day, I was more than satisfied with just a tasting along with some fond memories and photos.
