Burgos: Stepping Back Into Medieval Spain
One of the great treats of walking the Camino Francés is getting to visit four great gothic cathedrals: Pamplona, Burgos, León, and ultimately Santiago de Compostela. Burgos was particularly special as I had now been walking for about ten days and felt like a true pilgrim working my way across northern Spain. Like many others, the gothic cathedral here in Burgos is spectacular. Of special note is that this is also the final resting place of El Cid. As I strolled along the large plaza surrounding the cathedral, its hard to miss the most ornate of the twelve city gates also from the Middle Ages, the Arco de Santa Maria. On our most recent trip to Burgos, we treated ourselves to a night at the Hotel Mesón del Cid overlooking the cathedral.
